Day 9 & 10 Alfta
On the train for Alfta
located 2 hours north of Stockholm we were joined
by Swedish judge Britta Roos-Borjeson who gave us
a great travelogue of the local landscape and culture.
The area was considerably more remote than any we
had visited so far and it was a pleasant change
from the 'hubbub' of the larger cities. We were
staying at the beautiful Alfta Gastgiveri Hotel
, which is over 300 years old and located in the
rugged Halsingland region of Sweden. The decorative
carvings, paintings and decorative ornate tiled
stoves were in direct contrast to the modern level
of service and amenities including high speed internet
at the disposal of the guests. The food was 5 star
and the owners were particularly helpful with every
request, large and small.

We were judging at a 1900+ All Breed
show sponsored by the Alfta Nationella Hundutstalling
and held at the spacious Alfta Forspark. The grounds
were spacious with large rings on excellent grass
with plenty of room for exhibitors and camping.
Show chairperson Christina Bergh and the rest of
the club members are to be congratulated for organizing
an excellent and successful event.

On Saturday evening we were treated
to another culinary feast. It began with cocktails
on one of the many covered verandas of this wooden
castle followed by the judges dinner in the spacious
upper dining room. The meal consisted of several
variations of traditional herring, various fish
entrees including several offerings of smoked salmon
and of course new potatoes. The main course was
pork medallions in a light sauce, vegetables and
sliced baked potatoes. An excellent variety of red
and white wine was served with dinner and the delicious
dessert of cream and fresh local raspberries on
top of a meringue crust was complimented by the
wide variety of after dinner liqueurs being served.
We enjoyed the company of the many club members,
their families and fellow judges. As well as the
Doanes from the USA we bantered till late in the
evening with judges David Flynn from Northern Ireland,
Mona Selbach from Norway, Ritva Raita from Finland,
Poul Ornemark from Denmark, Anders Lyrholm, Anita
Whitmarsh, Britta Roos-Borjeson, Per-Erik Wallin
and Elizabeth Rennerfelt all from Sweden.

The show was enjoyable to judge and
the results will be reported later. We bid fond
farewells to the local club members and new found
friends and judges and boarded the train to Stockholm
to board a flight the next day to San Antonio, Texas
for a five day judging assignment the following
week. Our first trip to Sweden was an exciting and
enjoyable adventure and we look forward to returning
someday to once again enjoy the awesome country
and it's friendly people.
