Day 8 & 9 Stockholm
The train for Stockholm
left at 9:00 am from central Gothenberg. We collected
the Doane's at a stop about an hour north where
they were staying with Bob Paust. The 4 hour train
trip took us through some magnificent countryside,
lake area and rugged terrain which reminded us a
lot of the Lake Superior area of Northern Ontario.
The hot and sunny weather was continuing and the
train ride was quite warm with the near 30 degree
temperatures. We arrived in Stockholm and took a
short taxi ride to our hotel. We would stay only
one night as we had to board another train the next
day for the two hour trip to the town of Alfta where
the show was being held.
We immediately booked
an evening Bus and Boat sightseeing tour of the
city advertised as 'Stockholm In A Nutshell.' We
enjoyed a pleasant walk from the hotel to the historic
center of Stockholm where our tour would begin.
The main street was blocked off from vehicle traffic
and crowded with tourists shopping, sightseeing
and just getting out to bask in the sunshine. Wendy
was searching for the Dalecarlian Horse which in
older days was primarily a toy for children but
is now considered a 'symbol of Sweden'. We did not
see any in the western part of the country but we
were rewarded with abundance in the shops in the
east. The brightly colored handcrafted pine horses
are painted in what is called the 'Kurbits' style
of painting and are quite unique. Dinner was a mouthwatering
fillet of beef smothered in a delicious house dressing
with roasted potato and vegetable in a pub a stones
throw from the King's Palace.
After dinner we enjoyed
the air conditioned double decker tour bus ride,
followed by the open air boat excursion in this
pulsating city built on 14 islands. The awe inspiring
architecture, mixed with the natural beauty of this
well laid out city could never be properly appreciated
with the short time we had at our disposal. We would
continue our overview tomorrow with visits to the
castle and museums of the Gamla Scan island in the
heart of the city.
In the morning we had
time for some general sightseeing and on to the
Nordic Museum for a lesson on Swedish history that
we thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately we had no time
to go to the Vasa Museum which will have to wait
until our next visit to Stockholm. Then it was off
to the train for the 2 hour ride to the town of
Alfta for another weekend of judging.
